Meet Steve!

My name is Steve and at this mature age, I am shocked to have found myself in a shelter. I was adopted as a small puppy and returned 3 years later because my owner could no longer keep me due to her lifestyle change. I find this sad and confusing ...

Because of my size and preference for men, I need an assertive - yet kind - male handler. I am larger than I appear in my pictures. I get along with some dogs but I pick my canine friends selectively. I have been known to do a little resource guarding; however, I pull that stunt only on occasion. Just call me a typical Shepherd! They believe some of my sensitivity is because I am pent up in the shelter and they feel I'd do much better in the appropriate home. I get a little nervous around SMALL children; so older children in the home will work better for me.

Steve is a beautiful, striking large German Shepherd mix-breed boy. His hair is longer and he is quite stunning. His size is intimidating. He LOVES, LOVES, LOVES going for walks. So, if you're a walker, he'll be your best fitness companion. THIS BOY KNOWS COMMANDS AND RESPONDS WELL WHEN GIVEN COMMANDS!

Now through his quarantine period, he is ready to experience love and security in the safe arms of a committed owner and to meet his "forever home and family." Never to be orphaned again!!! He will need kind & consistent training. With your patience and consistency, he will learn and become your next best friend - and the pet companion you've always wanted.

Containment is "key" - either on the end of a safely installed lead / leash or in a fenced yard - when rescuing a dog until trust and boundary training is established. Furthermore, dogs do not fare well when encountering a moving car. Keep in mind ... many dogs cannot ever be trusted off-lead.

Do you have up to 15 years to share with a selfless dog? Do you understand the commitment? Can you provide a "forever home?" Do you have what it takes to be the best pet parent ever? If you can answer "yes" to these questions we can talk about a future for Steve!

Note from staff: in the shelter environment, Steve needs to warm up to new volunteers and staff slowly; however, it seems to happen within just a short time. He's just not the kind of boy that wants someone to come straight at or over him. If done, he gets very concerned for his own safety. Steve is up-to-date with routine shots, house trained and neutered.

Reminder: Make sure your dog has identification tags on and all information is current. Tags are even better than a microchip when searching for your lost pet. Microchips are a second assistance when trying to locate your lost pet - especially if they have slipped out of their collar. Tags can be purchased for "pennies" at the adoption center and will save you "millions" in upset should your pet become lost!
